EMSELLA Chair

EMSELLA Chair is a non-invasive procedure to treat urinary incontinence for both men and women. It works by stimulating and strengthening the pelvic floor muscles.
Urinary Incontinence is the involuntary leaking of urine and is a treatable condition. It can be caused by a number of things such as weakened pelvic floor muscles, pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, nerve damage and more. This can often interfere with your daily activities, work, time with your family and friends, gym workouts and even your intimate life. You may even find that you’re constantly scoping out the nearest bathroom when you go out in public in case you quickly have “to go” and\or change your pad.
Urology of Indiana now offers the EMSELLA® chair – a non-invasive, FDA-cleared device that uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology to stimulate and strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. The treatment is for women and men alike. (Yes, men can also experience urinary incontinence, especially if they have prostate issues or prostate cancer.)
The EMSELLA Chair delivers thousands of pelvic floor muscle contractions in a single session that are stronger and more sustained than Kegel exercises patients can do on their own. These contractions improve bladder control and pelvic support by helping retrain and strengthen the pelvic floor. EMSELLA is a large, round, padded chair with arms. Patients remain fully clothed and simply sit on the chair during treatment sessions. It is a walk-in office procedure.
What to Expect
During treatments, you will sit on the chair for about 30 minutes. You may feel tingling and pelvic floor muscle contractions. After treatment, there are no restrictions; you can resume all activities immediately.
- Typically, a series of 6 sessions (twice weekly for 3 weeks) is recommended.
- Some patients may experience improvement after the initial session. Best results are expected after a few weeks. Results may last 6-12 months or longer. Single maintenance treatments can be scheduled if symptoms begin to return. As with any treatment, individual results may vary.
EMSELLA can be used alongside pelvic floor physical therapy, lifestyle modifications or other treatments. Speak with your Urology of Indiana provider for more information about additional treatments that may be used specific to your symptoms and goals.
Please note that this treatment cannot be used if you have any metal or electronic implants. If you are uncertain if you are a candidate for this treatment, speak with your provider.
