October is Menopause Awareness Month, and here at Urology of Indiana – as we celebrate the first six months of our Center for Menopause – this recognition carries special significance. National attention to perimenopause and menopause has surged, not only in medical journals but across mainstream news, employer wellness initiatives and public health campaigns. The conversation is finally catching up to what women have been experiencing for decades: menopause is a major health transition that deserves expert care, evidence-based guidance and real support.

In just six months, our Center for Menopause has seen firsthand how transformative the right care can be. Women often arrive feeling confused, dismissed or unsure whether their symptoms “count.” Many have been told their fatigue, anxiety, sleep disruption or cognitive fog are unrelated – despite these being among the most common early signs of perimenopause. Others are unaware of the long-term consequences of ovarian hormone deprivation and its potential effects on cardiovascular, metabolic, bone and genitourinary health.

The Tide Is Turning.

Recent headlines reflect a growing recognition of menopause as a public health priority. New research consistently shows that perimenopause symptoms often begin years before cycle changes, reinforcing the need for earlier evaluation and proactive care. An increasing number of employers have begun adding menopause benefits to health plans. Private and corporate philanthropists have launched major initiatives to support menopause care and research, helping accelerate innovation, education and access for women nationwide. Media coverage has spotlighted the gap in clinician training – and the urgent need for specialized centers like ours.

This momentum is encouraging, but awareness alone isn’t enough. Women need access to clinicians who understand the complexity of midlife hormonal changes, recognize that menopause affects EVERY system and can offer both hormonal and non-hormonal treatment options tailored to their health history and goals.

As we mark Menopause Awareness Month, our Center for Menopause reaffirms its commitment to providing comprehensive, compassionate and evidence-based care for every woman navigating this transition. Through thoughtful evaluation, clear education and individualized treatment planning, our goal is to replace confusion with clarity – and frustration with a plan.

Menopause is a universal experience, but no woman should feel like she has to navigate it alone. This month, and every month, we’re here to make sure she doesn’t.
