Urinary leakage, urgency, frequency and pelvic floor weakness are extremely common – but they are not symptoms you simply have to live with.
Urology of Indiana offers EMSELLA® Chair, a non-invasive treatment designed to stimulate and strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. Treatments are available at our Urology of Indiana Carmel office location, with immediate appointments available.
What is EMSELLA?
EMSELLA is an FDA-cleared treatment that uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology to produce repeated pelvic floor muscle contractions. During treatment, patients remain fully clothed and sit comfortably in the EMSELLA chair for approximately 30 minutes.
The electromagnetic stimulation activates the pelvic floor musculature repeatedly during each session – providing an intensity and number of contractions that would be difficult to reproduce voluntarily with traditional pelvic floor exercises alone.
Is There Evidence Behind It?
Yes, but it is important to put that evidence in perspective.
Clinical studies of electromagnetic pelvic floor stimulation have reported improvements in urinary incontinence symptoms, quality-of-life measures and pelvic floor function in appropriately selected patients. The treatment is particularly attractive because it is non-invasive, requires no anesthesia or recovery time and does not prevent patients from pursuing other established therapies.
At the same time, EMSELLA should not be viewed as a replacement for a comprehensive evaluation or for established treatments such as pelvic floor physical therapy when those are indicated. Individual responses vary.
For that reason, we offer EMSELLA as one option within a comprehensive urogynecology and women’s health program.
What Can I Expect?
A typical treatment lasts approximately 30 minutes, and patients can immediately return to normal activities afterward. A series of six treatments, generally twice weekly for three weeks, is recommended. Some patients notice improvement after their first treatment, with optimal results often occurring after several weeks. Results may last 6 to 12 months or longer, with maintenance treatments available as needed, depending on an individual’s response and goals. EMSELLA may be used alongside pelvic floor physical therapy, lifestyle modifications or other treatment options.
Indications
EMSELLA may be considered for women with stress, urge or mixed urinary incontinence, urinary frequency or nocturia and certain forms of pelvic floor dysfunction. It is also used for men experiencing stress urinary incontinence following prostate surgery.
