Treatment
UTIs in men usually stem from an obstruction caused by a urinary stone or enlarged prostate. They can also be caused by a medical procedure involving a catheter. The first step is to identify the infecting organism and the drugs to which it will respond. Longer course therapy is often recommended for men than for women to help prevent infections of the prostate gland. UTIs in older men are frequently associated with acute bacterial prostatitis, which can be fatal if not treated immediately. Consequently, men with prostatitis may need long-term treatment with a carefully selected antibiotic.
