Symptoms and Causes
Primary hematospermia occurs without accompanying symptoms or hematuria (blood in the urine). These patients are found to be otherwise healthy. A approximately 15% of all hematospermia cases are self limited, occurring only once and resolves on its own.
Secondary hematospermia occurs in association with a known or suspected disorder, such as prostatitis or following a prostate biopsy. Other unusual causes include liver disorders, bleeding disorders and viral or parasitic infections. The presence of additional urological symptoms such as hematuria requires a more aggressive evaluation of the urinary tract including cystourethroscopy (the endoscopic examination of the bladder), prostate digital rectal examination (DRE), a blood test called Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) or kidney X-rays.
